WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?

“You can learn a lot of things about sex. You don’t have to use, like, your parents sitting down with you and telling you. The Internet’s where kids learn it from.”

- They Know What Boys Want, New York Magazine

Today's teens are learning about sex by watching porn online. We're wondering what you think porn's teaching kids today (not that you've watched any, of course) about women, men, and yea, even sex.  Oh, and just wondering, who here likes porn?

This is terrible! I don’t want my daughter thinking she has to be like a porn star for guys to like her. And if you think about it, aren’t the Paris Hiltons and the Kim Kardashians reinforcing this with their sex tapes? I don’t have any objections to porn generally, but I do think it’s unhealthy for porn to be kids’ only exposure to sex.

I was exposed to sex at the age of about 10. I found myself watching porn and being fascinated by it. Today I am 20 years old, a college graduate and am in Vet school. If you raised your daughter correctly, then her curiousity will take her places, both good and bad. Just because she sees sex, doesn’t mean she will partake. However, it is up to you to make sure she is practicing it safely when she does decide to pursue it. I am in no way questioning your parenting skills, but have some faith in your daughter.

Meg’s probably right, boys (kids) have been learning about sex through porn for a while…but the breadth, depth, variety and accessibility of porn has never been like it is now. Playboy and Penthouse were more like basic anatomy lessons than porn ed.

SC’s Paris and Kim examples are interesting to us, because we don’t think they were porn. They were sex tapes. What’s the difference? Not really sure, but maybe it’s the difference between filming it for yourself and filming it for others. And, btw, we’ve got nothing against porn either way…you know we’re all for whatever floats your boat here @OOC. But if porn takes the lead on teaching boys about girls and sex, and girls about boys and sex, we do worry there’s a whole lot of story lines being left out in the story of the pizza delivery boy and the lonely housewife. You know?
